Security Tips for Moving Into a New Home

Set Up a PASS Security System

PASS Security offers several home security options to protect you and your new home. To choose a system that you’re comfortable with, evaluate the needs of your neighborhood and your house. You can contact your local police department for neighborhood crime statistics and help doing a home security evaluation of your home. And keep these factors in mind as well: Smart home capabilities, extras like smoke and carbon monoxide monitoring. You’ve probably seen headlines about burglars being foiled by security camera footage. This is one home security solution that works as both a deterrent and a means to get justice. We recommend using a security camera with a mobile app, so you can see footage in real time and store it if you ever need to go to the police. Check out our other must-have features: motion detection, night vision, and Wi-Fi capability. To read more about our home security options, click HERE Click HERE to request a quote!

Secure the Doors

According to PRWeb’s “The Most Common Entry Points for a Break-In”, approximately 34% of all burglaries, the burglar walks in the front door. Inspect all of your exterior doors to make sure the door frames are strong, the hinges are protected, and that someone can’t reach through the mail slot to unlock the door. If moving into a previously live-in space, always replace all of the locks. Reinforce any sliding glass doors. You can go simple and use a window bar or dowel in the track to keep the door from being forced open. If you want a high-tech solution, add a door sensor or glass break detector to alert you if the glass door is tampered with.

Lock the Windows

Doors and windows are the most common entry points for burglars. You can upgrade window security with locks or key-operated levers. But you don’t have to stop there. You can reinforce the glass with window security film, install window bars, and use prickly bushes under the window as an added layer of defense.

Light Up the Landscape & Eliminate Hiding Spaces

Use motion-activated lights to keep trespassers in the spotlight at night. Place ample lighting around your front and back yards, along pathways, and around the garage and outdoor structures. Many outdoor lighting options are now “green” and use solar energy, so there are minimal ongoing costs after the initial setup price. Trees and shrubs give burglars a handy place to hide. Trim trees and plants close to your home that could be used for cover. If there are have trees near windows, either remove them or reinforce those windows with extra security.

Don’t Forget the Garage

Make sure your garage is secure. Chances are, you keep a lot of items stored there. If you don’t park in your garage, don’t leave the opener in your car. Cover the windows so thieves can’t see what’s inside to steal. There are now “smart openers” that will alert you when your garage door is open and will allow you to close it from anywhere you have your smart device.

Use Home Automation

If you’ve been tempted to turn your regular house into a smart home, security is one compelling reason to follow through. Home automation can give you remote (or scheduled) control of lights, locks, security cameras, smoke alarms, and other safety devices.
